Facebook Opens Sports Stadium

Facebook on Thursday announced its new Sports Stadium -- built with no taxpayer dollars or city leases required.

About 650 million sports fans already make Facebook the worlds largest stadium, the company reasoned.

The new hub will compile and chronologize game-related content in real time so that "you can get the feeling youre watching the game with your friends even when you arent together," said Steve Kafka, a product manager at Facebook.

The hub itself is organized by tabs labeled "Matchup," "Friends," "Experts" and "Stats."

Facebook Sports Stadium
Matchup offers an overview of the action, highlighting the latest big plays and fan reactions to go with them. Novel here is the ability to share plays from the hub to a timeline.

Remarks from paid and unpaid experts are funneled into either the Friends or Experts categories. The Experts tab is reserved for individuals discussing the game from verified accounts -- people such as sports analysts, journalists and chatty celebrities.

As for the Stats tab, its dedicated to the facts and statistics related to a given game.

The Facebook Sports Hub is available via iOS, but it isnt a standalone app. Its a feature that lives inside the core Facebook app, and it will be available on other platforms in the coming weeks, according to Facebook.

While starting with U.S. football, Facebook plans to add other sports soon.

The 12th Man

With just two more NFL games left before its season finale, Facebook Sports Stadium has arrived at a good time to interest people in trying out the new hub, suggested Justin Garrity, President of Postano.

"The Super Bowl is one of the most watched global sporting events, so it will be a great first introduction for Sports Stadium to a huge audience that will hopefully use it again watching their local sports teams," he told TechNewsWorld.

While the timing may help with adoption, Facebook will have to battle user behavior to get people to break away from what they relied on before Sports Stadium was a thing, said Ben Hordell, a partner at DXagency.

"That being said, I think the stadium will be visited by those who are already on Facebook while watching the game," he told TechNewsWorld. "Facebook has been integrating an Im watching feature based on your tastes, to start the process leading up to the stadium reveal."

A Sporting Chance

For the most part, social networks have been timid in plunging into sports, because leagues tend to try to control their online media, observed Andy Abramson, CEO of Comunicano.

Facebook Sports Stadium takes on a news role and avoids royalties, while the voice of the fans get stronger and more compelling, he told TechNewsWorld.

"The ease with which content can be put onto the Facebook platform, the speed with which fans and journalists alike can publish and share in an era of declining metropolitan media, and the rise of social media and influencer led journalism, means sports properties have to view influencers and what they are covering with a much wider view of the impact a local blogger could have on team, league or event news," Abramson explained.

Twitter stepped up its sports presence in 2014, when it launched the NFL on Twitter. The ongoing campaign has brought fans unique insights into the NFL, but it now faces serious competition on another front.

"I think Facebooks gain will be Twitters loss," said Hordell, "as Facebook steals some [share of voice] in being the preferred social second screen to accompany live sports viewing."

Starry has an FCC license to run pilots for 24 months in Boston and 14 other cities: New York, Washington, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Atlanta, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Seattle, Denver and Chicago.
Consumers will be able to install Starry products themselves, the company said.
It also unveiled Starry Station, a WiFi router with a 3.8-inch ambient capacitive touchscreen priced at US$350.

The Tech Behind Starry

The Starry Internet access network will have a hub-and-spoke architecture. Metro hubs will connect to the subscribers device and act as a home access point.

Its foundation will consist of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation coupled with multiuser multiple input and multiple output. It will have active phased array RF front ends.
"They are talking extremely high frequencies here -- approximately 30 to 300 GHz," remarked Mike Jude, a research manager at Frost & Sullivan.
Propagation issues arise with such high frequencies since they begin to act like a light beam, he told TechNewsWorld. "You have to worry about atmospheric attenuation and so forth."
Further, millimeter waves are pretty short and "would probably interact with atmospheric moisture or dust, so there would be attenuation issues," Jude pointed out.

Starry Station

The Starry Station consists of a polycarbonate cover with a silicone foot measuring 80x178x161 mm.

It has touchscreen ambient and interactive modes, an audio speaker, a microphone, a proximity sensor and amplifiers.
The Starry Station has dual-band concurrent 4x4.3 MIMO 802.11ac WiFi radios, dual-core network and display processors, two 1-GB Ethernet ports, and 1.5 GB of RAM and 8 GB of Flash memory.
Its interoperable with 802.11a/b/g/n and 802.11ac. It works with various devices -- including desktops, laptops and mobile devices -- and runs IPv4.
The Starry Station can be preordered at Starry.com until Feb. 5, after which it will be available on that site and for preorder on Amazon Launchpad.

Strong Points, Weak Points

The Starry solution "is designed to bypass last-mile cable and other carriers," said Sue Rudd, a research director atStrategy Analytics.
Its "just a cool-looking 802.11ac- and 802.15-ready WiFi access point with monitoring features," she told TechNewsWorld.
The Starry solution "would be used where theres no FiOS or cable or where connectivity is maxed out, such as risers in New York office buildings, or where the user wants a non-telco system," Rudd noted.
While using ultrahigh frequencies makes the Starry solution less prone to interference from other transmissions, "youd have less penetration through objects," pointed out Jim McGregor, principal analyst atTirias Research.
Starrys solution would require a network and small cells to support the end connection and then connect to a local network for transmission, he told TechNewsWorld.
Starrys differentiators are that it offers WLAN preintegrated with a millimeter wave backhaul, and its offered as a service by Starry, which "presumably takes care of the Internet connectivity on the other end," Rudd said.
As for the no-cap WiFi access, "WiFi use rarely counts against data caps anyway," she remarked.

Possible Challenges

The company "has as much potential as any other new WLAN hub startup," Rudd said.
The market is competitive, and it will have to take on established competitors such as Apple, Cisco, Netgear, D-Link and Linksys.
"I am very skeptical of service startups, especially those that require the deployment of a new network," McGregor said. "It takes time and money, and unless youre someone like Google, those may be limited."

Google will pay about $140 million in British back taxes in a concession driven by a shift in how the company will measure its success in the United Kingdom.

The terms disclosed Friday translate into 130 million pounds, a small sum for a business as prosperous as Google and its corporate parent, Alphabet Inc. The Mountain View, California, company has about $73 billion in cash.
