LG G5 release date, price, features and rumors
LG G5 release date and price
An unconfirmed report from South Korea in early December suggests that the LG G5 will be officially announced in early February, with a launch to follow mere weeks later.
The news is surprising as it would suggest that LG has thinly veiled intentions of competing directly with Samsungs Galaxy S7 (due to be released in March) or of snatching some early sales by pushing its flagship out shortly before its national competitors.
In mid-January, LG issued an invitation to an event to be held at MWC 2016 on February 21. The invite comes with the tagline "play begins". What this refers to exactly is unclear, but various outlets, including The Electronic Times, have been buzzing with speculation that the LG G5 will make its first appearance at MWC, and this invite would seem to support that theory.
The LG G5 price is not confirmed yet, but the LG G4 cost only a little more than its predecessor, the G3, and we hope this trend will continue with the G5. If it does, the G5 is likely to cost a little less than its nearest competitors at the top end of the market.
LG G5 specs
Details on the LG G5 specs are sparse, but there are a few rumors doing the rounds. Although theres little substance to it, a Reddit user posted a supposed rundown of the LG G5 specs on December 23.
The post suggests that the LG G5 will have a 5.3-inch screen, a metal unibody design, microSD card support, 3 GB RAM, a Snapdragon 820 processor and a dual rear camera. All in all, it seems to size up as a machine worth some consideration. Take a closer look over at Reddit. A later leak, from Droid Life, clained that the dual cameras are 16 and 8 MP (more on that below).
This goes against a previous report that came via phoneArena.com in early December and said that the display would be a 5.6-inch QHD number.
LG G5 design
A "reliable source" in China provided Walla with diagrams of a redesigned LG G5, which departs from its G series forbearers in a number of ways.
It looks set to be larger, than the G4, if only marginally, and the volume rocker has been moved from the rear of the device to partake in the more traditional side-of-the-device arrangement. The power button, however, remains on the rear, below the camera lens.
The parallel lines at the top and bottom of the devices rear strongly suggest a metal unibody design, as has previously been speculated.
Droid Life got hold of a series of photos that their source claims to be of an LG prototype phone, possibly the LG G5. The device is in a dummy box, making any fair assessment difficult, but the dual-camera setup and fingerprint scanner placement mirror earlier renderings and diagrams that have done the rounds.
The source also gave some information on specs, stating that the dual cameras are 16 and 8 MP. Elsewhere, the volume rockers have moved from the devices rear to the side, which, again, fits with earlier leaks.
LG G5 features
The LG G4 was missing a number of key functions, including fingerprint unlocking and a Type-C USB port, so wed like to see these among the LG G5 features. But could LG be going even further with the G5?
The rumor that the LG G5 would feature an iris scanner, which first appeared in WhoWiredWho, has caused quite a stir. It has since been suggested that LG has been working with biometrics company Irience to make scanning functional in the first half of 2016, suggesting that it could be ready in time for the G5.
If the rumors are true, this could be the latest in a long line of innovations that have often set LG apart from their competitors. Pursuing an iris scanner while the other big boys all start to introduce fingerprint scanners would be true to form.
