Here’s why I can’t put down the Galaxy Note 5
That camera
Samsung makes some of the best cameras you’ll find in any Android phone. I’m almost unable to find fault with the Note 5 camera and, compared with other flagships, it’s seriously hard to beat.
Forget the 16 MP resolution and f/1.9 aperture for a second. Just forget it. The way the Note 5 shoots, the quality of its images and the ability it gives you to make a shot look great are – in the end – most important.
Its shallow depth of field allows for good separation of your subject and background. Hey, you can even use it for decent macro shots. Color reproduction is also rich and looks vibrant on different displays. Tracking autofocus is great and, coupled with optical image stabilization, shooting professional video is a real possibility with the Note 5.
That design
I’ve written about how good the design improvements from Samsung were in 2015. Better materials and an overall more premium look have raised the bar for the Galaxy series. The Note 5 is, in my opinion, in a close race with theGalaxy S6 Edge+ for best-looking Android phone.
It has curved edges on the back, which let you cradle it in your palm. The machined aluminum edges don’t dig into your fingers. The display has very thin bezels on each side and the content it shows is more pronounced. Overall, it’s just a glossy, glassy piece of hardware. Sort of jewel-like. This might not be to your liking, but I’d take that over plastic any day.
Watching YouTube in QHD
If there is YouTube video content in 1,440p, one must watch it. And with the Note 5’s QHD display, this is something I’ve found particularly addictive. Not every YouTuber loads videos in 1,440p resolution or higher, but a lot do.
I normally watch videos in 1,080p resolution and love it. There is a lot of detail there. But watching the same videos on the Note 5, then switching over the QHD, shows how different the experience can be.
The detail and richness are on a different level with QHD videos. The textures of clothing, the wrinkles in skin, even the small details shown on displays in smartphone reviews – they’re all completely different in QHD. This is something the big, gorgeous Note 5 display does better than practically any other phone.
Split-screen mode
The Note 5’s split screen mode isn’t useful in every situation, but when it is, it’s awesome. Whether it’s taking notes while reading an article in Chrome, or browsing for best prices while checking tech reviews, it’s a feature that works well on that 5.7-inch display.
This is even more apparent in a productivity context. If you use the Note 5 for work, like I do, you’ll find split-screen mode a treat. And the S-Pen is much better that what you might think, so long as you don’t use it like an extension of your finger.
Hard to put down
Overall, the Note 5 is a very fast phablet with the best of everything thrown at it. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s fast, looks good and has a ridiculously nice display. The only problem is that I just can’t put it down.

Google released an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow this week and while it doesn’t pack a ton of new features, it does add some significant upgrades that Android users will be happy to see. The trouble, of course, is that it will likely take most Android phones a long time to get Android 6.0.1, especially since most Android phones haven’t even updated to Android 6.0 yet. That said, there are some very cool features users can look forward to trying out whenever they do get the new software. Let’s go over them below.
All the new emoji
Some Android fans have expressed irritation in the past that iOS tends to get the newest emoji before Android does. With the release of Android 6.0.1, Android has caught up in the realm of support for emoji and it has added support for more Unicode 8.0 emoji that Apple added with the release of iOS 9.1.
Double tap the power button to launch the camera
Android Police notices that Android 6.0.1 now gives older Nexus devices (including the Nexus 5, 6, 7 and 9) the ability to open up the camera just by double tapping the power button. This was a feature that Google debuted earlier this year with the Nexus 5x and Nexus 6P but this is the first time it’s come to older phones.
There’s no word yet on whether this feature will be included in non-Nexus Android phones that get Android 6.0.1 but it’s definitely something to look out for.
A small but important tweak to Do Not Disturb mode
Improving Do Not Disturb mode was an important feature of Android 6.0 and Google has tweaked it a little bit more with Android 6.0.1. Android Police explains that Android 6.0.1 brings back the ability to mute all your notifications until your next scheduled alarm goes off, which is a useful way to make sure you aren’t being constantly interrupted even during times when you want to be left alone in peace. This feature was previously available on Android before Google mysteriously removed it with Android 6.0, although now it seems to be back by popular demand.

Download and install an alternate launcher
If youre having trouble with a slow Samsung Galaxy S6, one of the first things we recommend you do is to swap out your launcher for a new one.
You may be surprised at the changes in performance that various launchers offer compared with others. While some launchers may appear clean and minimal, behind-the-scenes they can have your Samsung Galaxy S6 working overtime. Popular picks such as Nova Launcher, Solo Launcher and dodol Launcher are a safe bet, offering stable performance and a host of features to get stuck into.
If youre unhappy with the time it takes to browse through your collection of downloaded apps, many launchers offer settings that allow you to adjust page transitions and the speeds of those transitions.
Delete the cache
Over time, the cache on your Samsung Galaxy S6 can fill up with temporary folders that clog up your smartphone and create speed issues. One of our favorites for dealing with a slow-starting gadget is Greenify, which lets you control memory hogging and annoying background processes.
Greenify is arguably one of the most reliable performance-boosting apps on the Play Store, and its free to download which makes grabbing it a no-brainer. Simply put, the app puts programs into a state of hibernation to reduce the strain they put on the Samsung Galaxy S6 when theyre not in use.
Its worth noting that Greenify requires a rooted device to work at its very best, but there are plenty of features tucked into the app for non-rooted users.
Speed up animations
Using some useful Samsung Galaxy S6 settings, its possible to increase the speed of animations and page transitions. The result is a smartphone that feels satisfyingly snappy. Root is not required to try out this trick, so its a tip for the masses.
To speed up animations, head to Settings on the Samsung Galaxy S6. Scroll down and tap Build number multiple times. Doing so will activate Developer Options, which will appear on the same menu. Head inside and youll see the Window animation scale option near the top of the page.
From here, you can adjust transition speeds. We recommend you try 0.5x, head back to the Samsung Galaxy S6s home screen and see if you can spot the difference.
Delete unused apps
It sounds obvious, but its worth having a flick through your applications collection and removing ones that you dont use. OxygenOS 2.1.4 is now available for the OnePlus One
OnePlus announced on Friday that its first smartphone, the OnePlus One, has a version of OxygenOS 2.1.4 all ready for it. Unfortunately, this update will not be going out OTA and will have to be flashed on to the device. The reason for this is that the update for the OnePlus One is community sourced. OnePlus says that the process is no more difficult than "grilling a strip of bacon." Thats great if youre a carnivore, but if youre a vegan, it could get confusing.
OnePlus says that manually updating the OnePlus One to OxygenOS 2.1.4 will result in the loss of all of your data, so back up what you can. In addition, once the bootloader is unlocked, the integrity of your phone cannot be guaranteed by the manufacturer. Do not flash the new OxygenOS build through TWRP or else your handsets unique IMEI number will disappear, and that could end up in an epic battle with OnePlus tech support.
Now, we hate to be the bearer of bad news, but OnePlus One owners will not get feature parity with OnePlus 2 owners. The proprietary sound technology from MaxxAudio is not available. Manual camera settings and RAW file capability are not offered with the OnePlus One. Fingerprint scanning is also out, and you can not adjust the color temperature of the screen.
What will be available to OnePlus One users is the Dark Mode with different accent colors, custom icon packs, and the double-tap-to-wake capability. With the Marshmallow-esque App Permission feature, you can control the information that each app has access to by approving permissions on a feature by feature basis. The version of the OS for the OnePlus One has been made specifically for the device

1. It’s pretty quick, and probably won’t catch fire
In our benchmarks the Xperia Z5 scored an AnTuTu score of 65,094, which is towards the top of Android phone performance. That’s down to the Snapdragon 810 processor that’s inside it. If you’re thinking “hang on, isn’t that the processor in the Z3+ that has all the overheating issues?” you’d be right, but Sony has solved the overheating problems with the Z5 so you needn’t fear it going on fire.
That’s why the Z5 isn’t quite as fast as a Galaxy S6: the processor has been underclocked because of those heat issues. It hasn’t been underclocked dramatically – the Z5 will still leave most of the competition in the dust – but it’s worth knowing nevertheless.
2. It plays nice with your PlayStation 4
As we noted in our review, Sonys Music, Album and Video apps are great for multimedia consumption, but the most exciting thing is the Z5s PlayStation connectivity.
You can remotely play games on your PS4 from your Z5, as well as purchase games on your phone to play immediately on your PS4. The PlayStation Network also offers music and video of its own and everything is synced automatically.
3. It sounds good and the headphones are good too
The speakers aren’t brilliant, but only a masochist listens to music on smartphone speakers. What counts is how it sounds with headphones, and as you might expect from the company that INVENTED THE BLOOMIN’ WALKMAN the Sony sounds very good indeed.
The supplied headphones are excellent quality – the range appears to be a rather low 8 Hz to a high of 16 KHz, so there’s plenty of bass – and there are plenty of tuning options to get the sound just-so. If you’re a big music fan that’s important.
4. Its camera is brilliant
The Z5 topped our Best Android Camera list, with good reason: the new Exmor RS sensor has a super fast auto-focus speed of just 0.03 seconds. Still images have a resolution of 5,520 x 4,140 pixels and you can record 2,160-pixel video at 30 frames per second (fps).
Slow motion video capture is 720p at 120 fps. The camera software is great, and while the default resolution is just 8 MP so you can use lossless zoom to crop without losing quality the sensor maxes out at a whopping 23 MP.
There’s image stabilization too, and that combined with the fast auto-focus means you’re almost guaranteed in-focus images no matter what you’re pointing your Z5 at.
5. It’s got great battery life
The battery might just be 2,900 mAh, which is small compared with some of the power packs in recent Android phones (and smaller than the 3,100 mAh battery in the Z3+), but Sony has optimized the Z5 until it squeaks and you won’t need to worry about the battery running out before the day is up unless you work it really, really hard.
6. It has a microSD card
That matters if you’re going to be shooting 23 MP photos: you’ll fill up the 32 GB of on-board storage in no time. Thank Sony, then, for including a microSD card so you can expand the storage further. Isn’t that a good idea, Samsung? Eh? Eh? EH?
7 It’s about to get cheaper
Android smartphones don’t stay full price for long, for example, in the US T-Mobile is currently swiping US$100-200 off the prices of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge+, so don’t expect the Xperia Z5’s SRP of US$600 to stay undiscounted for long.
At full price the Xperia Z5 is a pretty good phone, but once the discounting kicks in it’s going to start to look even more attractive.
