Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 6.0 Marshmallow update

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been confirmed to receive the Android Marshmallow update, although it is not yet certain when. A GIGA reader offered a tip following an email he received from Samsung, which said that the company is working on Marshmallow for the Galaxy S5. 

Two rollout timetables showing Samsungs plans for Marshmallow have leaked in recent months. The latest gives the Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update a Q1 2016 release, so you can expect it to arrive sometime before the end of March.

In late January, GSMArena reported that an S5 owner in France received an OTA update to Android 6.0.1. You can see screenshots of the update running on the device below. This solitary update seems certain to be a mistake on Samsungs part, especially given that a similar thing occurred last month.

What it does mean, however, is that Samsung must be closing in on a final build of Marshmallow for the S5, and a rollout will likely follow hot on the heels of the S6 and S6 Edges updates. Keep an eye on this page for any further news.

Samsung monthly Android security updates

In August, Samsung – along with LG and Google – announced monthly security updates for several of its devices, including the Galaxy S5. The good news is that the first fix issued by Samsung will patch the code that is vulnerable to the Stagefright exploit.

The bad news is two-fold. Firstly, anyone who has not updated to Android 5.1 will not benefit from this patch, so if you own a Galaxy S5 that isnt on Android 5.1, you will have to wait even longer for a Stagefright fix. Secondly, hackers are reportedly targeting different parts of the vulnerability in order to get around the patch.

To see if your phone is vulnerable to Stagefright, download the Stagefright Detector app from Zymperium, the research lab that uncovered the problem.

Galaxy S5 Android Lollipop update (US)

Sprint Galaxy S5 update

Sprint pushed a follow-up Lollipop patch for the Galaxy S5 on August 5, bringing it up to software version G900PVPU3BOG1. The only change listed was a patch for the Stagefright exploit.

The Android 5.0 update for Galaxy S5 owners with Sprint (model number SM-G900P) can now be downloaded OTA. To see if the update is waiting for you, just go to Settings > About Phone > Software Update.

Verizon Galaxy S5 update

Verizon has rolled out another update to the Galaxy S5. Though it still sits on Android 5.0, the update adds a patch for the Stagefright security exploit. The Samsung Galaxy S5 5.0 Lollipop update is now available for those with Verizon devices (model number SM-G900V). The Verizon Galaxy S5 firmware now sits on build number G900VVRU2BOG5.

T-Mobile Galaxy S5 update

T-Mobile recently pushed out the Android 5.1.1 update to Galaxy S5 owners over-the-air. The update brings the Galaxy S5 up to software version G900T3UVS1FOJ4 OR G900TUVS1FOJ4, and includes security updates.

AT&T Galaxy S5 update

AT&T pushed out the Android Lollipop 5.1.1 update on 22 October, bringing the device to build G900AUCU4COI5. Head to Settings > About phone > Software update page to download it now.

How to solve the conection is untrusted browser error

Each time I tried using one of my old desktop PC, i received an error message that says "connection is untrusted" on all browsers installed on the PC, i tried to find out what the problem was, I thought it was due to the fact that my system  certificates were out of date.

However, I was able to come up with a simple tweak, i realized that the simply setting the date and time of the PC to the actual time solves the problem. Im still trying to come up with a reason for this, anybody knows why my system couldnt old his current date settings anymore? and is this "connection is untrusted" problem by any means related to non-updated firmwares on my PC?

When you think of luxury cars, you often think leather seats and that "new car smell" but what if you have plenty of money to spend, but dont want it lined with animal skin? Its a problem that plagues vegans.

For decades, leather-free options in the car industry have been limited at best. Generally speaking, buyers looking to avoid the use of animal products in their cars would have to settle for basic models with cloth seats and plastic steering wheels, but as they add options like better engines, heated seats or upgraded speakers, theyre often forced to choose leather seats.

PETA, a shareholder of Tesla Motors, has succeeded in urging the electric car company to launch a fully vegan interior option for the Model X electric SUV. Vegan customers now have a high-end interior option for the Model X. (Photo : Tesla Motors)

But now, Teslas "Ultra White" interior option, currently only offered in the new Model X SUV, comes available with a fully vegan interior — including synthetic leather seats, steering wheel and gear shift — giving that streamlined luxury look of leather.

The company reportedly created the new interior option, in part, after receiving criticism from potential customers who felt the companys eco-friendly stance on limiting emissions made no sense when the cars included animal products.

Livestock around the world account for about 14.5 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions caused by humans, according to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. Critics argued that Teslas continued use of leather would be perpetuating the need for more livestock, which would release more gas.

Many people might not know that animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, is a shareholder of Tesla Motors. At the companys annual meeting in June last year, PETA urged Tesla to offer vegan leather for the interiors of its vehicles, with CEO Elon Musk stating that he would "absolutely" consider it.

"By offering a 100 percent leather-free car, Tesla is pushing its eco-friendly business even further into the future," PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement. "PETA can now point to Tesla as a source for top-quality vehicles whose cruelty-free seats are as kind to the environment as its engines are."

Tesla is taking reservations for the Model X with a $5,000 deposit. The estimated base price is $80,000. Delivery is set to begin at the end of 2016

The giant Tech company Microsoft has disclosed the launch of a new update for Android device users, the company says the new version of the app for Android will have added new two features that will enhance productivity for Android users.

 The new updates makes calling easier than ever as users can schedule calls in a Jiffy. Also, users can now easily open the Office documents – Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets – from the chat window.

“We know that many of you arrange calls over Skype, and we’ve now made it easier for you to add it to your calendar, so you don’t forget about them,” Microsoft stated in a blogpost.
It added, “If a friend sends you a Word document, tapping on the file will open it right up in Word for Android; no extra steps needed! If you don’t have Office apps for Android installed, tapping on the file will give you easy instructions on how to download and install them.”

The Updated version of the app is now officially available on  Google Play Store for Download.

Star Wars Episode IX will be shot on traditional film

J.J. Abrams shot Episode VII on film, and its a process that his successors are going to continue for at least the remainder of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Speaking at Sundance Film Festival, incoming Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow said he also intended to shoot the movie on actual film, rather than using digital cameras.

Explaining his preference, he compared it to the more authentic look it lends period pieces, saying "Theres something in my brain that says, well they didnt have video cameras then,", before joking that the untitled Star Wars: Episode IX is "a period film. It happened a long time ago."

Trevorrow isnt just keeping in line with the style Abrams established, either. When he shot Jurassic World, he and cinematographer did so on a mixture of 35mm and 65mm film.

Just look at the difference between a picture on VHS compared to Blu-ray. And the larger the film stock, the more detail will be captured and made available for future generations.

Although fellow Disney stablemate Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be the first film shot in digital 8K, thats at the high end of what the human eye will take in and a form of future proofing itself -- most cinemas cant display in 8K yet anyway.

Trevorrow is among a growing number of Hollywood directors championing traditional film, too. Notably, Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan are among those evangelising the format, and the resurgence in popularity in recent years has meant that Kodak expects its film business, once on the brink of closure, to return to profit.

Recent versions of iOS have been found to contain references to Li-Fi, an experimental high-speed wireless networking protocol that uses pulses of light to transmit data and is being marketed as a long-term replacement for Wi-Fi.
Beginning with iOS 9.1, the operating systems library cache file makes mention of "LiFiCapability" alongside other hardware and software capability declarations. The change was spotted by Twitter user Chase Fromm and independently confirmed by AppleInsider.

Li-Fi works in a way not entirely unlike a traditional infrared remote control. Data is transmitted by rapidly modulating a light source, and received with a light sensor before being reassembled into an electronic signal.

Unlike your television remote, Li-Fi uses visible light and the modulation happens in a manner imperceptible to the human eye: that means the same bulb that lights your hallway can act as a data access point. Its also much faster, with theoretical throughput capacity of up to 224 gigabits per second.

Li-Fi is still in the experimental phase, but a number of companies are working to commercialize the technology. At least one firm, India-based Velmenni, has already begun real-world testing.

In addition to the software references, Apple is known to be working on hardware implementations for light-based wireless data transfer, or optical wireless communication.

A patent application filed in 2013 and assigned to Apple describes a method of "optical modulation using an image sensor." The sensor in question could be switched between image capture and data capture modes, allowing for light capabilities without adding additional hardware.

Apple envisions this particular system being used for indoor location, but the general principle is the same as more high-bandwidth applications.
